Western movie (this genre can be also named the thriller or the action film) – is an adventure film often related with wandering, having a nail-biter plot and usually ending with a happy-end. Western film is characterized by a lot of shooting and death of large numbers of characters, but usually it’s shown without naturalism. It is important that this is not necessarily a Texas western movie, it can tell about adventures in the eastern desert, for example. Old western movie is centralized on the life of a wandering adventurer, usually a cowboy or a gunslinger. He has all the attributes of the corresponding historical period - cowboy hat, neckerchief, spurs, gun (revolver or rifle), saddle - but not necessarily a horse. A staunch horse can also be an important character in such movie.

The typical characters of a movie western are: an imperturbable sheriff, an independent bounty hunter, a dashing cowboy, a bloodthirsty Indian chief (enemy of the main character), a noble Indian (sometimes mate and companion of the main hero), insidious gangsters, professional poker players, pure and innocent heroine, a femme fatale, sometimes canaries, the girls from the bawdy houses and their madam. Westerns are inspired with an atmosphere of freedom and independence, which is characteristic for the western United States. In a new western movie the action takes place in modern America, but themes and motifs of the Wild West are used.
